Seastone is a historic Mediterranean Revival residence in Carmel Highlands, originally constructed between 1917 and 1918 and widely regarded as the first home built in the area. The architecture is defined by a rich and eclectic composition, featuring Byzantine-inspired triple-arched windows, Catalan vaults, and stained-glass detailing with heraldic crests and motifs drawn from French and Spanish traditions, including references to medieval armor. The exterior is clad in locally quarried Carmel limestone, grounding the home in its regional context.
Attributed to Greene & Greene, the residence reflects a highly individual architectural language shaped by craftsmanship and material expression. The home has been thoughtfully reimagined by S|H Architecture for a modern family, preserving the historic character and “soul” of the structure while updating infrastructure and refining the interiors in collaboration with Kathryn M. Ireland.
The result is a residence that bridges past and present—maintaining its architectural identity while supporting contemporary living within one of the most iconic coastal settings.
